Introduction.
Botany Department was established in 1965 before this it was a Biology Department.
The post graduation in botany started in 1974 after the establishment of Science
College due to sincere efforts of Prof. R.M. Patel the doyen of the department.
First batch of students passed out in 1976. Till date 33 batches have successfully
completed their post graduation degree and each year about 5-6 students secured
place in the merit list of the D.A.V.V. During last 30 years the department has
provided facilities in research of high order both in quality and quantity.
The department has a cluster of eminent teachers and researchers whose contribution
deserves reverential acknowledgement. Later on Prof. R.P. Shah, Dr. C.M. Solanki
contributed to guide the destiny of the department. There are well furnished and
well equipped laboratory for undergraduate and post graduate classes.
The museum of the department was set by Prof. R.M. Patel. Subsequently Prof. R.P.
Shah and Dr. C. M. Solanki carried out the up gradation of the museum. Department
has well maintained botanical garden with unique and rare plants including plants
of medicinal value.
There is a departmental library for postgraduate students, which has 900 books along
with science magazines and journals. It helps to provide the latest information
about the subject.
The department has distinguished and experienced faculty members out of which 05
are having Ph.D. degree and 01 having Gold Medal in M.Sc.
Dr. C.M. Solanki, Dr. Dr. O.P. Joshi, Dr. S. Ray, Dr. M. Adhav have carried out
their research work in botany department of the college.
Prof. S. Nagar, Dr. J. Sikka and Dr. S. ray have been invited as “Resource person”
in various seminars and workshops in and out of University
Dr. J. Sikka and Dr. S.Ray have earned Regional, National and International recognition
for their contributions in the field of Biodiversity, environmental science and
social awareness.
Dr. J. Sikka is a “Young scientist” awardee of M.P. Council of Sci. & technology.
She is also associated with “Eklavya” and has been a member of book writing team
of NCERT, for upgradation of C.B.S.C. syllabus. Dr. Krishna Haryani is also a “Young
Scientist” awardee by INSA, Bhopal chapter. Dr. S. Ray has made valuable contribution
in the field of biodiversity and plant conservation. Presently he is a member and
coordinator of Malwa (Indore) Ecoregion, in M.P. State Biodiversity Board. He has
a major project on “Biodiversity of Nimar region” to his credit. Dr. M. Adhav has
contributed in the field of ethno medicinal plants. Dr. J. Sikka, Dr. S. Ray, Dr.
M. Adhav and Prof. M. Kachhawa are engaged in carrying out various projects sponsored
by U.G.C. and other agencies. Prof. A. Bhatnagar has been the chairperson of Boad
of studies in Botany in DAVV and Dr. J.Sikka has been a member on Board of studies
in Environment in Kasturba Gram Rural Inst, Indore.
Dr. J. Sikka and Dr. S. Ray are recognized as Ph.D. Supervisors in D.A.V.V. Indore.
There are about 10 students working for their Ph.D. research work under their guidance.
The department has organized seminars and workshops from time to time for the upgradation
of faculty members. To name a few -
Workshop on “Industrial Pollution and Forestry ”, Seminar cum workshop on “Biotechnology
and Biometry.”
Seminar cum workshop on “Cytogenetics and plant breeding.” Seminar on “Environmental
degradation in 50 years of independence, National Seminar on "२१ वीं सदी मैं वनस्पति विज्ञान शब्दावली"
Regional Seminar on “Conservation, Assesment, Management of Medicinal & other Economic
Plants of Malwa(Indore) Ecoregion, M.P.”, Regional seminar on “Sports and Environment”.
Our department has taken initiative in the revision of syllabus at post graduate
level. The Department has also prepared a guide line of approx. 30 practical’s for
undergraduate students. Department provides platform to eminent teachers, researchers,
workers and P.G. students for the academic discussions to enrich latest knowledge
in the field.
Keeping in view the fast changing scenario of the world the department has taken
few steps for the benefit of the students which include Lectures of renowned professors
and subject experts on important topics related with the syllabus, Seminars by the
students and presentations on various topics followed by discussion. Pre University
Exam at P. G. levels. “Parent Teacher Association” meetings at Post Graduate level
for developing better understanding with students. The department provides enough
material to P.G. students in the form of charts and diagrams along with the comments.
Regular Tutorials are also arranged for up gradation of weak students.
Our department has the privilege of providing two principals, first was Prof.
R.M.Patel, then Dr. O.P. Joshi who have
always been a source of inspiration and guidance for the betterment of the department.
The existing status of the department is the outcome of the efforts, devotion and
attachment of each and every member of the staff. In last few years many eminent
Teachers like Prof. P. Marathe, Prof. N. Warang, Prof. A. Bhatnagar and Dr. O.P.
Joshi have given their valuable contribution and retired leaving behind many pleasant
memories.
